Drithkowl

Long ago when the ambitions of humans was in the conquest of all the lands of Dalun the gnome clans came out of their mountain strongholds to help defend the Northlands from assault. With the aid of the dwarves, the gnomish armies constructed a stone redoubt that was magically imbued with the power of their greatest spell workers. During the war Drithkowl was never taken and the walls became stained black with the blood of heroes on both sides. This, some people say, is why the stone bricks of Drithkowl are so dark. By the time the war came to an end there were numerous lines of gnome families, both of noble and low birth rank, mingling in one place, the fortress of Drothkowl. Many of these lineages had been broken by casualities suffered during the conflict with the invading humans. The previously disparate gnome clans came together to rebuild and make a permanent and unified settlement as to prepare for future invasions and prevent such catastrophic losses from happening again. The fortress of Drithkowl slowly changed into a sort of sanctuary-city for the people of the north. At the present the cold lands of the north have become inhospitable and dark and the folk of Rokourd have realized now more than ever that they must stand together if they are to flourish. Despite this coming together of households and unified effort to maintain a safe place in the north Drithkowl is by no means a pleasant place to live and it is not welcoming to outsiders.

Long has Drithkowl had a rivalry with their neighbor to the south, Edril. However, in recent years there hasn’t been much contention. Some speculate that Governor General Hallour has his hands full dealing with the impending threat of ice giants banding with the hobgoblin army of the north and thus is unable to wage open war with Edril. There are whispers of Kowled spies and assassins at work waging a secret war despite these difficult times.
